Discovery Days

Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is providing a special programme of Discovery Days for 2011. Spanning morning and afternoon, these special events combine taught sessions, artefact handling, art and craft activities.

Your Discovery Day will be made up of two sessions, a morning and afternoon of approximately 1 hour 30 minutes each. If two classes are brought then they will swap over at lunchtime. One session will be mostly artefact-based and concentrate on historical enquiry. The other will look
at works of art and techniques associated with a particular culture as well as including an art-and-craft-based activity.

Sessions available include:

Ancient Egypt
Art, History and Drama have been combined to create a day of exploration. Pupils will learn about mummification, handle artefacts, design a sarcophagus and participate in a roleplay activity.

Ancient Greece
Using role-play and discussion, children will be introduced to the different ways that the Ancient Greeks portrayed mythical stories from the BMAG collections. Paper cutting techniques will be used to create a theatre mask of their own which can be taken back to school.
