Pre-Raphaelite / Victorian
Art
Children will
explore paintings
from the gallery’s
famous Pre-
Raphaelite
collection, including
works by Rossetti,
Holman Hunt and
Ford Madox Brown.
The paintings are
a good source of
evidence about
Victorian life, and
illustrate the preoccupation
of these
artists with the
social conditions
around them,
as well as their
interests in myth, legend,
biblical subjects and
heroic themes.
The Pre-Raphaelite
Brotherhood was formed
in 1848. The aims of
the young artists who
made up this group were a
reaction against contemporary
fashionable painting which
they viewed as insipid and
stultified and lacking in
any sincerity or truth to
nature. As the name of the
brotherhood suggests, they
admired early Italian art
before the time of Raphael.
Key Stage 3 pupils are given
an educational
tour to discover the social and personal
events in the lives of the Pre-Raphaelite
artists, which are sometimes symbolically
represented and linked to both myth and
literary sources. These can be viewed in
conjunction with other works within the
collections, both historical and contemporary. For more

This painting is an
excellent resource
for teaching about
Victorian England.
It shows the subject
of 'work' as it affects
all levels of society.
It was inspired by
a group of navvies
digging up the road
to lay sewers in Hampstead.
