Mary
Seacole
(KS
1 and 2)
Mary Seacole was a black
nurse born in the
Caribbean who lived and
travelled extensively.
Her offer to help the British
army in the
Crimean War was rejected
by the authorities
in London because of prejudice.
Undeterred,
she got herself out to
the war by her own
efforts and at her own
expense, risking her
life to bring comfort to
the wounded and dying
soldiers.
Eventually recognised
and honoured
for her kindness
and bravery, Mary
Seacole became the
first black woman
to make her mark
on British public
life.
The session
includes role-play,
dressing up, artefact
handling and a tour
of Soho House.
