Aston Villa Football Club has its origins in a Wesleyan Chapel Sunday school cricket team. They were looking for a winter activity and formed a football club around 1872. AVFC moved to their current site in the 1890s. This area was was part of the gardens and grounds of Aston Hall. In Victorian times it became a place of entertainment - Aston Lower Grounds. But the enterprise did not make money and the Lower Grounds were sold to Aston Villa. The football ground has undergone many alterations and this picture shows the back of the famous Holte End and, on right, the new Trinity Road stand opened in 2000. |
