Hot air filled this first balloon on the ground. It sailed 300 metres into the sky. Then landed a mile and a half away when the balloon had emptied of hot air.

Of course it worked on the principle that hot air rises.

Later balloons had the fire under the opening, and the basket slung under the fire.
