Travel and trade spread diseases world wide.

Those returning from the Crusades (fights with the Muslim Turks to free the Christian Holy Places in Palestine) brought back the Black Death - the plague.

Epidemics of plague (the real disease rather than an epidemic of measles or chicken pox) caused more distress than any other illness in History.

It led to isolation hospitals being set up - the first time provision was made for the sick, apart from medical care provided in monasteries.
