The Stuarts Religion The break from the Catholic church gave rise to all sorts of different Protestant sects. Groups like the Puritans wanted very plain services and disliked any decorations in churches. They wore simple clothes and didn't believe in adorning themselves either. Strict Puritans cropped their hair very short and wore plain black clothes with a white collar. They wanted the common man to have more say in all areas of life, not just the Church. Some Puritans became very involved in politics. As a powerful group in the House of Commons they showed their dislike of Charle I's policies and the advice he was given by his Catholic Queen. The Puritans were amongst many sections of society who left for the New World - America. They sought freedom from persecution. Catholics, as well as Puritans and Quakers, hoped to be able to worship in their new country as they wished. They left all they knew for the unknown, and often difficult and dangerous life, on a new continent. Their willingness to do this shows the extent to which people were harassed for their religious beliefs. The Mayflower was most famous of the emigrant ships. It left Plymouth in 1620 with the Pilgrim Fathers on board to seek a better living in the New World. Who did the settlers meet in America? |
