Women

Stuart times saw the peak in persecution of witches - usually women!

In Medieval Times they had been looked on as another kind of doctor. They mostly handed out herbal remedies, but occasionally offered to make love potions or kill enemies at a distance as if by magic.

It was after the country turned from Catholic to Protestant in Henry VIII's time that the Church claimed supposed witches were given special powers by the devil.

Many harmless people, often old and perhaps behaving a little oddly, were tortured or burned death.
