This is the mill stone that was used to grind up the wheat seeds. The seeds are taken up to the top of the mill in a sack on a chain and then they are poured down a chute into the eye of the stone. When the wheat has been ground up it is called meal. A big sieving machine called a boulter gets the bran out of the meal because Victorians didn't like their flour to have bran in it. (They didn't know that it's good for you.) |
