art 17th century Dutch artist were largely patronised by the bourgeoisie,
whose taste was for paintings of themselves, their homes and possessions,
their towns and countryside. Landscapes are not idealised in the classical
style, but tend towards realism.

English portraiture was dominated by Sir Peter Lely at this time; two
Lely portraits are often exhibited together with one of his rarer subject
pictures, 'Susanna and the Elders'. .
