Women appreciated less tight lacing and the disappearance of the awkward farthingale (hooped skirt).

A gentleman swaggered around in breeches, doublet (jacket), lace collar and wide brimmed hat with a plume. Boots with wide turnovers set off the outfit.

These garments were seen as the mark of a cavalier - supporter of King Charles I in the seventeenth century Civil War.

The opposition - the Parliamentarians - included many Puritans (a religious group). Their mode of dress was influenced by the Dutch.
