Norman Events The part of the Bayeux tapestry shown opposite depicts the most significant event - the Battle of Hastings - which opened Norman times. William of Normandy defeated the Saxon King Harold. Both sides were evenly matched but in the last remaining light of the day William ordered his archers to fire a volley of arrows into the 'huscarls', crack troops, surrounding Harold. Harold was killed and William urged his cavalry astride huge destriers (Norman warhorses - the forerunners of the shire horse) to follow up the advantage. The 'huscarls' were cut down and the remains of the Saxon army fled. How did Harold die? Click the picture for an answer. |

The Domesday Book was really two books. They were compiled so that William I could find out about England - and work out how much to tax everyone! It is a useful source of information to Historians because all sorts of things were mentioned in order to value property - the number of men, wages, ploughing teams, livestock, mills, beehives, the state of the land........ What was used to write the Domesday Book?
