In place of spinsters who would carefully feed fibres through a rotating flyer that twisted them into yarn, Arkwright's invention had a series of roller pairs.
Each pair ran faster than the previous pair to tease the fibres out.
Several yarns could be spun at the same time.
The one in the picture spun four threads at the same time.
