Many of these were friendly to the seventeenth century white settlers - at least as long as the settlers showed respect for the Indians' beliefs!

The Indians showed the white people how to grow local crops like maize, and traded with them.

Unfortunately the white settlers gave the Indians their diseases like measles. They had not come into contact with it before and it wiped out whole Indian villages .
