The lady is an air raid warden. Her work included checking that no one showed a light at night to help guide in the German bomber, organising people into shelters during an air raid and helping clear up when the all clear is sounded.

Women played a big part during the Second World War. They also worked in factories, on farms as land girls and were called up to join the services if they were single and aged between 19 and 30 (this was later extended to 54).
