• Mary, Queen of Scots

A Catholic claimant to the English throne. She married first the heir to the French throne and then Lord Darnley. When he was murdered she married Lord Bothwell.

She was unable to control the rough Scottish lords. Her unpopular husbands did not help and she had to flee to Elizabeth for protection.

Elizabeth kept her under close guard. But Mary became involved in Catholic plots to make her Queen of England.

Elizabeth had her executed in 1587.
