The lady's maid would put the stretchers inside each finger. She then squeezed the bottom of the stretchers to open them out and stretch each glove finger. This would make it easier for the rich lady to pull her gloves on.

A grand lady would like a close fitting pair of gloves and the Victorians did not have our modern stretchy materials.

Kid was baby goat skin. Ivory comes from elephant tusks.
