The food for the feast is prepared in the kitchen at Blakesley Hall. It is hard work. Elizabeth Smalbroke sr and her daughter in law, Elizabeth jr work together, helped by two maid servants and a boy. Can you see the hare dangling from a meat hook? It is near to the foodsafe - the hanging cage. The foodsafe is where raw or cooked meat is placed to keep it cooler and the flies from landing on it.

The pastry has to be made and rolled out for the pies. The small brown fruits in the wooden bowl are a sort of apple called medlars. Can you see the white bread and the big square of cheese?

Elizabeth added spices to the foods to make them taste better. She also added spices to rich sauces for the meats. They were very expensive. The spices in the bowl are ginger and nutmeg. Can you name some other spices that Elizabeth might use? Why did spices cost so much in Tudor England? |
