The Parlour Wing

view of the great parlour July 2001

This picture was taken looking towards the wall separating the room from the public cloakroom, and boiler house. These are being removed and the little parlour recreated in its original space.

Notice the metal pole. This supports one of the heavy ceiling beams. Below is another picture of it.

a closer look at the metal pole and the beam it supports

The architect wants to remove the metal pole! But the beam must have help in supporting the wall of the room above. A metal girder must be inserted through the original oak so that it will not spoil the look of the old beam, yet still allow it to support the upsatirs wall safely.

Another part of the plan is to replace the short passageway from the garden into the parlour wing. Look at the picture below carefully.

recess to the right of the fireplace

The white wall to the side is the boiler room. Notice how it cuts the long narrow window, which 'lit' the passageway, in two. The timber beams of the back wall are original The wood appears a silvery grey colour. The short part of the cross beam (darker brown one) was part of the inner wall of the passage and led to the little parlour. The wood to the left of the picture is part of the fireplace surround.
