Photo of real Late Graeco-Roman Mummy

Late Graeco-Roman Period Mummy (300 A.D.)

This mummy is from the Late Graeco-Roman Period (332 B.C-A.D 395) when the Romans ruled Egypt. The mummy decoration is unique to the period and is the product of the two (Roman and Egyptian) cultures.

The scans show that this mummy was male, aged around 30 years old and was in reasonably good health.

The Brain

This mummy's brain has been completely removed. An ‘embalming hook’ would have been placed up the nose and the brains pulled out.

The Skull

There are three or four pieces of mysterious material at the base of the skull. It was first thought that it was an arrowhead but no entry or exit wounds can be seen, so the mystery remains.

Can you think of anything it could be?

The Teeth

This mummy's teeth have not been used a lot which suggests that the mummy was under 30 years old when he died.

The Shoulders and Hips

The mummy’s shoulders and hips are out of shape. This is because the person making the mummy was more worried about getting the decorative bandages into shape than the bones.

The Gold Studs

There are gold covered studs in the wrappings of the mummy. This is because in the 21st Dynasty it was more important to have decorative bandages than preservating the body.
