Ancient Egypt - Explore Real Egyptian Mummies

Photo of real mummy: Padimut

Padimut 21st Dynasty (1085-935 B.C.)

Mummy of the priest of the goddess Mut, called Padimut, meaning “the one who Mut gave”.

The scans show a man around the age of 40. They also show that he has a slightly elongated skull.

Scan of the head from the side

The Brain

This mummy’s brain has been completely removed. An ‘embalming hook’ would have been placed up the nose and the brains pulled out.

Photo of the face to show the eyes

The Eyes

This mummy has false eyes placed in front of the real eyeballs. This was done to give a person sight in the afterlife. They are possibly made from stone or glass.

Photo of the teeth

The Teeth

The teeth have been dislodged. This is because Padimut has been unwrapped and may have been damaged whilst being moved.

Scan of a front view of the organs

The Organs

The organs have been removed, mummified and returned to the body.

Scan of the side view of the head and neck

The Neck

The neck has been stuffed with packing material. This was because the ancient Egyptians believed that the neck was a vulnerable part of the body which could be cut off after death. The bandaging may have contained protective amulets which were removed when Padimut was unwrapped in the 19th century.
